Extended Coverage Q&A with Josh

April 14th, 2022 by

Josh O’Byrne is our Business Manager at Scott Peterson Motors of Belle Fourche. He’s been with Scott Peterson Motors for over 10 years. His knowledgebase extends far beyond the business office and finance department. He generously took the time to run through a few commonly asked questions regarding extended coverage options. Check out the full Q&A below.

Q) Can I still purchase extended coverage through the dealership for “as-is” pre-owned vehicles?
A) Yes, you can in most circumstances. It’s dependent on the age and miles of the unit.

Q) I’m looking at a newer model year pre-owned vehicle. I’ve seen that the manufacturer offers a 3 year/36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. The vehicle is less than 3 years old and has less than 36,000 miles; will I still have access to this coverage?
A ) Yes, as long as the vehicle is within the factory’s warranty limits, you will have access to that coverage.

Q) I’m going to buy a brand new vehicle, why do I need additional coverage? The manufacture includes a very comprehensive warranty already.
A) It all depends on your driving habits and trade cycle. If you plan on keeping the vehicle over the factory 3year/36,000 mile warranty, then it might be worth looking into extended coverage.

Q) What happens if the new vehicle I purchase is totaled and I still owe a significant portion of the value?
A) If you bought our Gap Protection, then you will be taken care. If you decided against it you’ll be liable to cover any negative equity.

Q) I drive a lot, and one of the biggest expenses I encounter are chipped or cracked windshields-is there an option for that?
A) Yes, we do offer a windshield protection program through our Express 4 bundle.

Q) What type(s) of extended coverage are available to me?
A) They are all VIN specific and depend on the mileage. On vehicles with lower mileage, you can choose a factory warranty like coverage. Comparatively, a vehicle with higher mileage may only qualify for limited coverage.

Q) It sounds like there are a lot of choices for extended coverage warranties. I don’t know how to decide what’s best; what do you suggest?
A) We always tailor our options to fit the customer. Ultimately, we want you to have what enough coverage for your lifestyle and your needs. I will typically present 2 or 3 options as packages, and at that point we can discuss potential add-ons or customizations.

Q) My bank/insurance company offers extended coverage, why should I choose to buy a warranty through the dealership?
A) From my past experience, coverages that are offered by banks and insurance companies usually don’t cover near the amount of parts and labor than ones that we offer to our customers.
